Where To Find The World's Best Pizza
I'd been standing in line at a pizzeria in Italy whilst on holiday, waiting to buy a slice of Margherita to cure my food cravings, when I overheard a conversation between two Americans in front me. These folks were going over the merits of pizza from around the globe and where the best places to eat may be found. It will not surprise you to hear they talked about the cities of New York and Naples as having the best restaurants, however when I decided to interject with my own thoughts, it was pleasing to find we all suggested a Clapham pizza restaurant in London for really fantastic food.
During our short dialogue we'd compiled a pretty decent list of eateries at which to get a good slice of pie. I of course asserted firmly that Clapham pizza was number one, but my American friends were equally partisan. What we did acknowledge is that whether it is a deep dish or thin crust, a good pizza is hard to find and when you do, it's difficult to resist going back time and time again. So, if you're a local, or someone passing through while on holiday, and don't wish to get short-changed on sauce, cheese and toppings, take a look at these places and you'll have no complaints whatsoever.
Eco (London) - Sami Wasif's restaurant on the High Street in Clapham (and just a short stroll from the famous Clapham Common) has been a popular Italian eatery for nearly 20 years now. This pizza genius has created the lightest, tastiest sourdough base and combines it with some of the most diverse ingredients you're ever likely to find. Among the more eclectic toppings you can purchase a truly world-class Margherita - quite an achievement given you'll be beyond the borders of Naples. Generous portions, cracking service and the best Clapham takeaway bar none.
Di Fara (New York) - For a UK Italian food lover, Di Fara's is something of a pilgrimage and chances are you'll only get there once in your lifetime. Not so for New Yorkers who know their pie, they queue around the block daily to get a slice of chef Domenico DeMarco's San Marzano sauce with molten cheese. This is no-nonsense eating in the heart of Brooklyn. Be ready to wait as they only cook one at a time, but the wait is most definitely worth it.
La Sorrentina (Naples) - Such a tough choice when it comes to picking a top Naples restaurant since the city is the home of pizza and if the local eateries can't get it right here, where can they? There are over 12,000 pizzerias in Naples itself and 25,000 in the whole region and the city even has an annual championship where the elite duke it out for top honours. However, glittering awards aren't enough, there needs to be a strong tradition behind a great pizzeria and La Sorrentina is a typical family-run restaurant. Chef Pasquale Sivo has been cooking up delicious food for nearly 30 years and his Neapolitan is a prize-winning pie.
40's Cafe (Australia) - If you find yourself in a land down under, or more specifically the wine-producing Barossa Valley, be sure to get a table at the 40's Cafe to sample chef Damon de Ruiter's gourmet pizza. Having won top honours in Oz, Damon is now taking his culinary skills to the international stage to compete with the world's best.
Hopefully this sample of top eateries has got your taste-buds salivating, I know mine are so I'm off for my favourite Clapham pizza slice or two, or three...
